Weight Loss Success Story – Gloria W.

Gloria’s Weight Loss Journey

Tell Us A Little Bit About Your Weight Struggle

I’ve always been curvy, and I’m the type that wears my weight well. I didn’t really realize how much weight I had gained until the pandemic hit. I kept hearing stories about African American people being overweight, and how they were more likely to get critically ill or die from the virus. I decided to buy a scale, and little to my surprise I weighed in at 200 pounds.

What Was Your Wake-Up Call Or “A-Ha Moment” That Caused You To Really Commit Yourself To Succeeding?

The scale reading was my wake-up call in a million ways. I thought this is totally unacceptable and I have to come up with a plan right now.

How Have Your Eating Habits Changed Since Beginning Your Journey? What Did You Eat Before And What Are You Eating Now?

I used to eat a lot of icing, cake and cookies. I also loved soda, and I probably consumed more than what I should have. I have to admit that I’m a sweets monster, and I still eat sweets almost everyday.

Although now I only eat maybe 8 or 9 M&M chocolate peanuts, or either I eat a peanut butter cup or two. I normally treat myself to two pieces of cakes or a large cookie every week.

I usually snack on cashews everyday, and I drink a lot of water now. I love Mexican food and I also love beans and cornbread. I have never been a veggie person, but now I cook with green and red peppers. I don’t eat beef, and I seldom eat pork or fried foods.

What Is The Difference In Your Fitness Before You Started And Now?

I used to workout in my younger days, but I never remained diligent. Once the pandemic hit, I transformed to a fitness queen. I was terrified and I had to find new ways to decompress.

What Has Been The Biggest Change/Payoff For You So Far?

The biggest payoff is my 37 pound weight loss. Also, I no longer have to take high blood pressure medication, and I don’t suffer from leg pain anymore. My nails are healthy again, and my skin is aging backwards. I am now medication free!

How Much Weight Have You Lost? How Long Did It Take You To Lose It?

I’ve lost 36/37 pounds. It took me a little over a year to lose most of my weight. I started exercising in my home at a slow pace (15 minutes per session, 4 days a week). After awhile I started exercising for 45-65 minutes per session. I truly enjoy working out, because my fitness plan involves dancing to hip hop & R&B music. I really feel like a teenager all over again when I am dancing.

Some Advice and/or Words of Wisdom I’d Like To Share

Always remember that no one is going to take care of you better than you take care of yourself. I tell people that just like you make time to eat everyday, you can also make time to add fitness to your schedule. Exercising is just as important as eating, so prioritize it. If I can remain diligent in my sixties, there is hope for everyone.

There are so many benefits, and once you see your body transforming, you’ll truly be motivated. Exercising has taken my mind to a different level. I’ve learned how to relax and I don’t entertain toxic energy anymore.

One thing to remember is everybody may not be happy for you, but don’t let anyone deter you. I guard my physical and mental health, just like a parent guards their newborn baby. I’m medication free now, and I’m very humble. Try not to beat yourself up if you overeat or miss a day. After all, none of us are perfect at the end of the day.

I weigh myself almost everyday, because it’s easy to manage something that you can measure. I allow myself to go over a few pounds, and once I exceed more than 5 pounds, I make myself get back on track. My diet does not consist of any diet foods, but do what works for you (just remember to stay hydrated).
